From snare victim to second chance
Towards the end of last year, we got a call about two dogs barking frantically at the river nearby. When we arrived, we found Lester - an Africanis - caught in a snare.
The wire had embedded deeply into his neck. In trying to free himself, he had snapped the snare, but it remained lodged in him, causing immense pain.
By his side was Luke, a black spaniel cross, fiercely protective and unwilling to let anyone near Lester.

At Woodrock, we were able to carefully remove the snare and start providing him with the treatment he needed. Those first few days were critical, and the first few weeks required patience but slowly, something beautiful began to happen as Lester started to find his feet again.
Shelter life, though, was not for Lester but thankfully we have a wonderful extended family of foster carers who are willing to step up and help.
Now, Lester is thriving with his foster family. He loves going on walks, running after his foster dad and slowly learning that human touch can be gentle and safe.

And while he is no longer with his brave little protector, after Luke was adopted, he is no longer the terrified dog we first met. Step by step, he is finding his confidence and learning to trust again.
Lester is proof of what patience and love can do.
