Mental Health Awareness Month: Small Moments, Meaningful Impact

As Mental Health Awareness Month is recognised globally this May, we’re reminded that support doesn’t always arrive in big, obvious ways: sometimes, it’s found in small, meaningful moments of connection.
It is this understanding which inspired the creation of Woodrock’s innovative wellness programme, Paws @ Work, which harnesses the power of “furry antidepressants” to ease stress and anxiety in even the most high-powered environments.
Initially piloted at a leading healthcare financial services company over 24 months, Paws @ Work has proven to be a game-changer in the corporate mental wellness space. Through structured workplace sessions, the programme creates a safe, welcoming environment where employees can pause, engage, and reconnect with themselves and one another with the help of ten engaging and calming therapy dogs.

Recently, our rescues including Dali, the French Bulldog; Bobo, a King Charles Cavalier; and Gigi, a Shih Tzu, visited Rand Merchant Bank in Sandton for a special wellness engagement with staff.
What unfolded throughout the day was something simple, but deeply moving.
In between meetings, deadlines and screens, staff members found themselves slowing down. Smiles appeared almost instantly. Conversations became lighter. People gathered not around presentations or performance targets, but around dogs offering calm, comfort and uncomplicated affection.

There is something profoundly grounding about the presence of animals. They ask nothing from us except presence. No polished answers. No productivity. No performance.
And in a world where burnout, stress and emotional fatigue have become part of everyday life for so many people, those moments matter more than ever.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to acknowledge not only the importance of mental wellbeing, but also the role compassion, community and animals can play in helping people navigate modern life.
